I create mixed-media surrealist sculptures that tell stories about my body. Pulling from graphic childhood dreams and a lifetime of experiencing my body as a dancer and as a queer person, I describe how joy, rage, isolation, and wonder move through me over time. Pushing the limitations of conventional materials like wire, clay, and crochet are integral to my work. By obscuring the lines between these mediums, I produce a range of recognizable forms like ribs or teeth and abstracted textures like oozing red paint on folded tin foil. With forms and textures put together, each piece has a visual and narrative logic within itself to invoke somatic sensations. I make these sculptures to create space in myself for the full range of emotion that comes with being human, and as an offering that the witnesser may do the same. As my heart lights up, maybe yours does, too.
